Level Up Your Home Bar: Essential Tools for the Perfect Cocktail

Dreaming of crafting delicious cocktails in the comfort of your own home? I have been bartending for over 10 years now and I have a few favourite tools that work well for the right price.

1. The Shaker: Your Cocktail's Best Friend

No home bar is complete without a reliable shaker. Whether you opt for a classic cobbler shaker (with a built-in strainer) or a sleek Boston shaker (requiring a separate strainer), this tool is crucial for chilling and blending ingredients. Boston shakers are typically preferred by bartenders for their efficiency and better seal. I'd recommend a classic Koriko Tins. They have amazing seals, so drinks have a lower chance of blowing up on you. Yes it happens.

2. The Jigger: Precision Pouring

Consistency is key to a great cocktail, and that's where the jigger comes in. This double-sided measuring tool ensures you're adding the right amount of each ingredient, preventing overly strong or weak drinks. Look for a jigger with clear measurement markings for easy use. I'd recommend a Japanese jigger with measurements inside. You see them everywhere for a reason.

3. The Strainer: Smooth Sailing

A strainer is your secret weapon for removing ice and other solids from your cocktails, leaving you with a smooth, refined drink. If you chose a Boston Shaker you'll need a Hawthorne Strainer. A julep strainer is also a great addition for stirred drinks. I’d recommend getting one that is a little more expensive with stronger metal, the cheap ones can fall a part pretty quickly. If you want a fancy designed one make sure it uses better materials.

4. The Bar Spoon: Stirring and Layering

Don't underestimate the power of a good bar spoon. Its long, slender design allows for effortless stirring and layering of ingredients. The twisted handle also helps with layering liquids and is great for allowing the liquid to slide down the spoon and into the glass. Id recommend getting one that is nice and long and has a smooth stem. You will thank me later, companies actually make ones that are somewhat sharp.

5. The Muddler: Releasing Flavors

For cocktails like the Mojito or Old Fashioned, a muddler is essential. This tool helps to gently crush fruits, herbs, and spices, releasing their aromatic oils and flavors. Choose a muddler with a flat or textured end for optimal muddling. I’d recommend one that is stainless steel. Wood is nice but eventually the chemicals they put in the wood will leach into your drinks. Rubber is okay, but less microplastics are nice too.

6. The Citrus Juicer: Fresh is Best

Freshly squeezed citrus juice is a game-changer for any cocktail. A simple handheld citrus juicer will do the trick, ensuring you get the most juice out of your lemons, limes, and oranges. I’d recommend one that is also stainless steel. The bright yellow ones look nice, but once that paint chips its going into your drinks. Save the headache and stick with stainless steel.

7. The Mixing Glass: Stirred, Not Shaken

For cocktails that are meant to be stirred, like the Martini or Manhattan, a mixing glass is a must-have. Its wide, open design allows for easy stirring and chilling. I’d recommend two options here. Go with a sturdy glass one, it looks beautiful when you are stirring on your home bar. The second option being again stainless steel. If you have your friends over or a little clumsy the mixing glass is one the first things to break.

8. The Ice Bucket and Tongs: Keeping it Cool

No bar is complete without ice! An ice bucket and tongs will keep your ice readily available and prevent contamination. Invest in a quality bucket that will keep your ice frozen for longer. Pick one that you like there are beautiful stone ones nowadays. They are a little heavy but they look amazing with their marbled exteriors.

9. The Peeler and Channel Knife: Garnishing with Style

Garnishes add a touch of elegance to any cocktail. A peeler and channel knife will help you create beautiful citrus twists and other garnishes. A sharp tool is your friend. If you love a properly done orange peel for your Negroni or Old Fashioned a good peeler is a must. Cheap ones will leave you without a layer of your skin at some point.

10. Quality Glasses: The Finishing Touch

The right glassware can elevate your cocktail experience. Invest in a variety of glasses, including:

  • Old Fashioned glasses: For stirred cocktails.

  • Coupe or Martini glasses: For shaken cocktails.

  • Highball glasses: For tall, refreshing drinks.

With these essential bar tools in your arsenal, you'll be well on your way to creating delicious and impressive cocktails at home.
